It’s perfectly normal to want things done according to your vision. But it’s not so much about what you say, but how you say it.
Even if you are asking for a change, if you present it as a question or suggestion, the editor will feel valued, confident and secure. And therefore, more open to trying, playing, and ultimately, finding the best solution.
It’s as simple as going from “do it this way” to…
- Could you do it like this?
- How about we try….?
- How about…?
- I would like to try…
And we move from orders to the question of guilt: whether the error came from your part or from theirs… what does it matter?
If you need to clarify what the source of the problem was to prevent future mistakes, do so. But avoid blaming — when has blaming ever brought anything good?
Adapt the feedback to the editor
Introverts, extroverts, direct, diplomatic, more or less confident…
but we do not always consider that we do not all receive feedback in the same way.
And it’s not just about giving feedback in a respectful way or avoiding hurting their feelings, but about delivering that information in the best way possible for the development of that writer.
I like to tailor the way I deliver
